Hiking and trekking can be exhilarating adventures, offering breathtaking views and a deep connection with nature. However, as recent events have shown, they can also come with unexpected dangers. In May 2023, a group of climbers from Singapore faced a harrowing experience while trekking up Mount Dukono, a volcano on the remote island of Halmahera in Indonesia. What began as a planned expedition turned into a life-threatening situation when the volcano erupted unexpectedly. The group had meticulously prepared for the climb, consulting local guides and planning their itinerary over the course of a year. On the morning of May 8, as they approached the summit, the volcano erupted, sending rocks and debris raining down. One climber was injured, and despite the efforts of fellow climbers and their guide, Mr. Reza Selang, the situation quickly escalated. Mr. Reza, who had been operating a drone to capture the moment, witnessed the chaos unfold and faced a heart-wrenching decision when he could not rescue his companions from the volcanic debris. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of safety precautions in outdoor activities. While hiking can lead to unforgettable experiences, it is crucial for adventurers to stay informed about potential hazards and heed local advisories.
