Starlink Kenya Pauses New Signups in Nairobi as Demand Exceeds Network Capacity
Starlink has recently halted new signups in Nairobi and six other counties in Kenya due to overwhelming demand that has exceeded the network's capacity. This decision affects areas such as Kiambu, Mombasa, Machakos, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Kwale, redirecting potential subscribers to a waiting list. While customers can place a deposit to secure their spot, the company has not provided any timeline for when capacity will be available again. This situation highlights the rapid growth of Starlink in East Africa, particularly in urban centers like Nairobi. Since its launch in July 2023, Starlink has seen a dramatic increase in subscribers, with numbers soaring from 8,063 to nearly 25,000 by March 2026. The company has successfully reduced its hardware costs, making its services more accessible to a broader audience beyond affluent users. The initial price of KES 89,000 (approximately $689) has been slashed to KES 49,900 (around $386), alongside rental options and affordable data plans. This pricing strategy has allowed Starlink to capture a significant market share, although it still represents less than 1% of Kenya's fixed-internet market. The pause in new signups is not the first for Starlink in Nairobi; a similar freeze occurred after a surge in demand in late 2024. This pattern of rapid growth followed by capacity constraints has become a recurring theme for the service across various markets. For Nairobi's community of remote workers and digital nomads, the suspension of new subscriptions poses challenges, as it limits their options for reliable internet access. As Starlink navigates these growing pains, the situation underscores the competitive landscape of digital connectivity in East Africa. With traditional providers like Safaricom continuing to dominate, the demand for satellite internet services highlights the ongoing evolution of the region's digital infrastructure.
