Nairobi, Kenya, is at the forefront of a significant shift in Africa's approach to renewable energy. Experts emphasize that the continent's greatest challenge is no longer merely constructing clean energy projects, but rather establishing the necessary institutions, markets, and regulatory frameworks to support these initiatives at scale. This transition is critical as Africa seeks to provide electricity access to the approximately 600 million people still without power. The global landscape for renewable energy is changing rapidly, with renewables generating 34% of the world's electricity in 2025, surpassing coal for the first time. As demand for energy continues to rise due to industrialization and technological advancements, the bottleneck in the transition to cleaner energy has shifted from technological limitations to the institutional frameworks that underpin these projects. Former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg highlighted the need for investment in market design and regulatory capacity, noting that clean energy is now cheaper than fossil fuels in most regions. Bloomberg Philanthropies has initiated a $285 million program aimed at strengthening clean energy industries in emerging economies, focusing on the institutional infrastructure necessary to facilitate investment and accelerate renewable energy deployment. Delays in project implementation often stem from weak market designs and slow permitting processes.
