Melbourne Tops Global List as Most Expensive City for Beer and Cigarettes, Report Reveals
Melbourne has recently been highlighted as the world's most expensive city for both cigarettes and beer, according to a report by Deutsche Bank titled "Mapping the World's Prices." This comprehensive study analyzed cost-of-living data from 69 cities across six continents, revealing that Melbourne and Sydney are the two Australian cities that lead the rankings. The report indicates that Melbournians now pay 89% more for five beers and two packs of cigarettes than they did a decade ago, while Sydneysiders face an 82% increase. The steep sin taxes imposed by the Australian government are largely responsible for these soaring prices, which have effectively deterred smoking and contributed to a significant decline in smoking rates across the country. In addition to the high costs of cigarettes and beer, Melbourne also ranks among the most expensive cities for public transport. The report places Sydney in second place globally for public transport costs, just behind London, while Melbourne follows closely in fourth place. Despite some fare freezes and discounts in Victoria, the overall costs remain high. Monthly public transport passes are not commonly available in these cities, making it challenging for residents to manage transportation expenses. Interestingly, while public transport is costly, petrol prices in Australia are relatively low compared to other cities worldwide. While Melbourne and Sydney are known for their high living costs, they also offer competitive salaries. Melbourne ranks 11th in the world for monthly salaries, yet the growth in wages has not kept pace with inflation or the rising cost of living. Despite this, the strong labor market and high levels of employment contribute to a relatively high standard of living. Ultimately, while living in Melbourne comes with its financial challenges, it also provides a vibrant lifestyle and numerous opportunities for its residents.
