Delta Expands Flights from LAX to Newark, Challenging United Airlines in Los Angeles
Delta Air Lines is making a strategic move to expand its operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by introducing a new route to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), set to launch on April 12, 2027. This initiative is part of Delta's broader ambition to strengthen its presence at LAX, which has historically been a competitive hub for major airlines. The new service will feature twice-daily flights, utilizing Airbus A321neos, with a total of 194 seats per aircraft, including 20 in first class. Despite the excitement surrounding this expansion, Delta faces significant challenges in competing against United Airlines, which currently dominates the LAX to EWR route with ten daily flights, primarily using wide-body aircraft that offer a premium experience. Delta's offering, while aimed at providing more options for travelers, may struggle to attract passengers who prioritize comfort and frequency. The airline's decision to enter this market seems to target loyal Delta customers who prefer EWR over JFK, despite the limited appeal given United's strong foothold. Scott Santoro, Delta's VP for Los Angeles and West Coast sales, emphasizes that this new route reflects the airline's commitment to connecting key business markets. However, the competitive landscape raises questions about the viability of this route, particularly as Delta does not offer the same level of onboard amenities as United. The market between LAX and EWR is the third highest revenue domestic route in the U.S., but Delta's approach may not significantly disrupt United's established customer base.
