London fire: Bermondsey in South East London engulfed by blaze as smoke fills sky | UK | News | Express.co.uk

A major fire broke out shortly before 8pm on Tuesday at a waste facility on Landman Way in Deptford, south-east London. Thick black smoke was visible for miles across the capital. The London Fire Brigade sent 15 fire engines and about 100 firefighters to tackle the blaze, which involved an estimated 50 tonnes of household waste. The Brigade received the first of more than 160 calls at 7.59pm. Crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and nearby stations attended, working through the night in difficult conditions. Firefighters used a 32-metre ladder and a 64-metre ladder as water towers to attack the flames from above. Residents in the area were advised to keep doors and windows closed because of the large amount of smoke. The fire was brought under control at 2.16am, but crews remained at the site into the morning and afternoon to extinguish remaining pockets of fire and dampen down the area. The cause has not yet been established. Reports also noted that firefighters had attended another blaze at the same facility in June. The incident caused serious disruption to rail services near London Bridge, Canada Water, New Cross and New Cross Gate, with lines blocked and some passengers delayed. National Rail later said the disruption had ended, but the entire Windrush Line on the London Overground was suspended on Wednesday morning. The incident is relevant to London because it affected both local residents and key transport routes in south-east London, showing how an industrial fire can quickly disrupt travel across the capital.
