Billionaires Fund Climate-Sceptic ARC Amid London Climate Action Discussions

London recently faced an unprecedented heatwave, prompting the cancellation of the Extreme Heat event during Climate Action Week. This situation underscored the urgent need for action against climate change, as Mayor Sadiq Khan introduced the city’s first Heat Action Plan. The plan acknowledges that extreme temperatures are becoming a regular challenge rather than a rare occurrence. UN Secretary-General António Guterres aptly remarked that London is "cooking," highlighting the pressing reality of climate issues in the capital. Amidst this climate crisis, the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) convened a gathering of influential figures, including billionaires, politicians, and cultural leaders, who expressed skepticism about climate action. Founded in 2023 by prominent right-wing figures, ARC has positioned itself as a counter to what it perceives as an overly progressive agenda. While the organization claims to advocate for Western civilization, it has drawn criticism for its dismissive stance on environmental regulations, coinciding with London's adaptation to a hotter future. The financial backbone of ARC includes significant contributions from wealthy donors and conservative institutions. Sir Paul Marshall, a hedge fund billionaire, plays a central role in this network, using his resources to support initiatives that oppose progressive policies. His charity, the Sequoia Trust, has notably funded ARC and other conservative organizations, linking resistance to environmental efforts with broader ideological battles against immigration and multiculturalism. This coalition of ultra-wealthy individuals aims to reshape public discourse and politics, often at the expense of younger generations who are largely absent from these discussions. Despite ARC's claims to represent the interests of youth, the voices of young people were notably missing from the conference. While speakers lamented the challenges facing younger generations, their perspectives were rarely included, raising concerns about the authenticity of ARC's mission. As London grapples with the realities of climate change, the contrasting narratives presented by organizations like ARC highlight the complexities of the ongoing debate over environmental action and societal values.
