Umoja Art Gallery Staff in Kampala Denied Visas Ahead of Africa Basel Art Fair
Umoja Art Gallery, located in Kampala, Uganda, recently faced significant challenges when its staff were denied Swiss entry visas, preventing them from participating in the Africa Basel art fair. This event, which opened on June 17, aimed to showcase the work of African and African diaspora artists, yet the gallery's booth remained empty, marked only by a sign that highlighted the barriers faced by artists from less accessible regions. The absence of artworks served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles within the global art ecosystem, where physical borders can stifle artistic expression and representation. Founded in 2011, Umoja Art Gallery has established itself as a vital platform for both emerging and established artists, supporting over two dozen creatives and running a residency program since 2025. Among those artists is Makano, a young Congolese talent based in Kampala, whose work critically addresses themes of governmental corruption and societal issues. His perspective, shaped by personal experiences of depression and frustration, reflects the broader challenges faced by many artists in the region. The gallery's inability to showcase such voices at a prominent international fair underscores the complexities of navigating the art world from Uganda. John Hillary Balyejusa, a representative of the gallery, expressed the frustrations of his team, who spent two months attempting to secure the necessary visas. He speculated that the current Ebola outbreak in East and Central Africa might have influenced the visa decisions, despite Uganda not being at the epicenter of the crisis. This situation highlights the stark contrast between the idealized vision of a global art community and the harsh realities many artists encounter, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity and support for diverse voices in the art world.
