TG4 Launches Cartlann TG4 Online Archive Ahead of 30th Anniversary in Dublin

Last week, TG4 unveiled ‘Cartlann TG4’, a new online research archive at the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) in Dublin, in anticipation of its 30th anniversary this fall. This initiative aims to enhance access to TG4's extensive digital archive, which showcases a rich tapestry of Irish history, culture, music, sport, news, and community life, all presented through the Irish language. Since its launch in October 1996, TG4 has produced over 50,000 hours of Irish-language programming, and the new platform is a significant step in preserving and sharing this wealth of content. The Cartlann TG4 archive is continuously being digitized, with a focus on materials from the station's videotape archive, which was in use until 2012. Currently, the site offers access to more than 9,000 programs, with plans to upload additional content from both the early years and more recent productions. This preservation effort is supported by partnerships with Europus and funding from the Broadcasting Funding Scheme, ensuring that the archive remains a dynamic resource for researchers and the public alike. Designed with user-friendliness in mind, the archive features a clear layout that allows for both simple and advanced searches by date, genre, and other criteria. Users can save search lists and clips, making it an invaluable tool for anyone interested in exploring Irish life and culture. Access is tiered for different types of researchers—public, educational, and production—ensuring that the material is appropriately visible based on the user's needs. Deirdre Ní Choistín, TG4's Director-General, emphasized the importance of this archive as a vital part of Ireland's cultural heritage. With the ongoing development led by Máire Aoibhinn Ní Ógáin, the archive aims to serve as a living resource for future generations, allowing both young and old to engage with Ireland's rich linguistic and cultural landscape.
