Melinda French Gates Inspires University of Denver Students on Women's Empowerment

Melinda French Gates, a renowned philanthropist and business leader, recently delivered an inspiring message to over 400 students at the University of Denver during the annual Korbel Honors celebration. Speaking at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, she emphasized the vital role of empowering women in fostering stronger families, communities, and nations. “When a woman can step into her full power, it’s better for her, her children, her household, her community, and her country,” she stated, highlighting the far-reaching impact of gender equity. During the event, French Gates was honored with the Josef Korbel Award, which recognizes individuals who embody the values of the school’s founder by using knowledge to promote justice and peace. Dean Frederick “Fritz” Mayer praised her extensive work in advancing global health and women’s economic power, calling her efforts a model of the Korbel mission. Reflecting on her career at the Gates Foundation, French Gates shared insights on the importance of centering women in philanthropy, noting that initiatives like drought-resistant seeds in Africa often fail if women farmers cannot access them. “If we didn’t focus on gender, we were basically missing half the equation,” she remarked. French Gates also discussed her current organization, Pivotal, which invests in underrepresented entrepreneurs and advocates for paid family leave. She highlighted the collaborative efforts of women lawmakers across party lines on critical issues such as education, offering hope for bipartisan solutions in a divided political landscape. Furthermore, she stressed the need for strategic philanthropy, urging that every dollar should be leveraged to encourage contributions from businesses and governments. In her closing remarks, French Gates encouraged students to engage in causes they are passionate about, underscoring that making a difference does not always require financial resources. “One person does make a difference in the life of someone else; it doesn’t always have to be big,” she concluded, inspiring attendees to utilize their skills and time to support their local communities.
