Brooke Shields Advocates for Casa Bonita Workers Amid Safety Concerns in Denver
Brooke Shields is currently advocating for the workers at Casa Bonita, a Mexican restaurant owned by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, located in Lakewood, Colorado. The restaurant has come under scrutiny due to claims from performers about unsafe working conditions and inadequate wages. Shields, who leads the labor union Actors’ Equity, represents around 80 performers who unionized in April 2024. She expressed her concerns about the treatment of young entertainers who are enthusiastic about their roles but are not receiving the care and respect they deserve. The performers at Casa Bonita are known for their engaging shows, which include cliff diving and puppet performances, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant dining experience. However, the union's negotiations with the restaurant management have reportedly stalled, with issues ranging from safety hazards—such as risks of hypothermia and chlorine toxicity—to the need for better pay. Shields emphasized that the performers are seeking wages that align more closely with those of the restaurant servers, who reportedly earn more. During her visit to Casa Bonita in March, Shields attempted to engage with management directly by delivering a letter requesting better wages for the performers. She described the experience as somewhat of an ambush, noting that her presence was initially unnoticed due to the restaurant's size. Despite the challenges, Shields remains committed to advocating for the performers' rights and well-being. Casa Bonita has acknowledged the ongoing labor negotiations but refrained from commenting further, stating that they value their team members and their well-being. Parker and Stone, both Denver natives, have been fans of the restaurant for years and purchased it five years ago. However, they have not participated in any of the bargaining sessions with Actors’ Equity, raising questions about their engagement in resolving these critical issues.
