Rapids celebrate downtown World Cup surge

The Colorado Rapids have successfully transformed Skyline Park into a lively World Cup fan zone, attracting around 40,000 visitors since June 11. This exciting initiative, developed in collaboration with the Downtown Denver Partnership and Street Soccer USA, features a massive screen for viewing matches, along with a variety of food and drink options, prizes, and team merchandise. The fan zone has not only created a festive atmosphere but has also provided a significant boost to local businesses, bringing the community together in celebration of soccer. In a remarkable achievement, Number Thirty Eight in RiNo has been recognized as the top World Cup viewing location in the nation, according to Lyft’s June trend report. This accolade highlights the growing enthusiasm for soccer across the United States. Rapids president Pádraig Smith noted that the event serves as a clear indicator of the sport's increasing popularity, while VP Caitlin Kinser pointed out how this success strengthens Denver's bid to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This celebration comes on the heels of record attendances at recent matches for both the Rapids and Summit FC, further emphasizing the soccer boom taking place in Denver. The community's engagement and passion for the sport are palpable, and it’s clear that soccer is becoming an integral part of Denver's cultural landscape. As the World Cup festivities continue, the excitement surrounding soccer in the city is only expected to grow, paving the way for a bright future for the sport in the region.
