Mark Cuban Explains Mavericks' Mistake in Letting Jalen Brunson Join Knicks
Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, recently reflected on the team's decision to let Jalen Brunson leave for the New York Knicks, revealing a significant oversight in their evaluation of the player. Cuban admitted that the Mavericks did not foresee Brunson's potential, stating, “It was really, really simple. We didn’t see JB, as what he would become.” During his four years with the Mavericks, Brunson's performance was modest, peaking at over 15 points per game in his final season. However, Cuban's decision to delay extending Brunson’s contract ultimately cost the team dearly. Before Brunson's breakout season, the Mavericks had the opportunity to extend him for $55 million but chose to wait, hoping to reassess his value after the season. Cuban believed he would have the chance to match any offers from other teams, but Brunson signed a lucrative four-year, $104 million deal with the Knicks before the Mavericks could respond. Cuban acknowledged that Brunson showcased his star potential during critical moments, especially when Luka Dončić was injured, but at the time, the Mavericks were focused on acquiring another star player to complement Dončić. Brunson's subsequent success with the Knicks has proven the Mavericks' misjudgment. He not only played a pivotal role in leading the Knicks to their first NBA championship in 53 years but also earned the NBA Finals MVP award. His impressive averages of 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds during the Finals highlight his growth as a player. Additionally, Brunson's decision to turn down a significant contract extension with the Knicks in favor of a more lucrative deal reflects his rising status in the league, further emphasizing the Mavericks' missed opportunity.
