New Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Helicopter Fleet Launches with Final Addition
Canterbury is celebrating a significant advancement in its air rescue capabilities with the introduction of a new fleet of helicopters. The final addition to this fleet, comprising four state-of-the-art Airbus H145 helicopters, marks the completion of a two-year overhaul aimed at enhancing emergency response services across the region. This upgrade not only includes the helicopters but also a $2.7 million flight and winch simulator, expanded pilot training programs, and improvements to medical equipment and helipads. The new helicopters are set to serve the vast Canterbury and West Coast areas, which encompass a staggering 63,000 square kilometers and a population of around 730,000. Anton Durazovic, the chief executive of the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, emphasized that these upgrades will facilitate faster travel times and smoother flights, even in challenging weather conditions. This means that the dedicated team of pilots and support crew can respond more effectively to emergencies, whether it involves transferring patients between hospitals or rescuing individuals stranded in remote locations. Critical care paramedic Adrian Hurst noted that these enhancements represent the most significant improvement in patient care in the service's 40-year history. The community's support has been instrumental in making this possible, allowing residents to feel secure knowing that help is readily available when needed. The new helicopters, branded as Westpac Rescue Helicopters, are recognized as the gold standard in air rescue, particularly suited for the diverse terrain of New Zealand's South Island. A celebration event in Christchurch is planned to honor this milestone, with hopes for continued growth in emergency infrastructure, including advanced flight routes and weather stations.
