Canterbury City Council Sees Decrease in Income from Parking Charges Amid Rising Public Transport Use
Canterbury City Council recently reported a significant drop in income from parking charges, amounting to nearly £500,000 over the past year. This decline comes despite an increase in foot traffic within the city center, indicating a shift in how residents and visitors are choosing to navigate the area. The council noted that more individuals are opting for public transport and utilizing park and ride services, which have seen a rise in usage. However, some regeneration projects have temporarily closed certain car parks, contributing to the overall decrease in parking revenue. Interestingly, while the council experienced a £133,000 increase in park and ride income, the total revenue from parking-related activities fell by £468,000 in the 2025-26 financial year compared to the previous year. Changes implemented in April 2024 had initially raised parking charges at some locations by as much as £2.10 per hour, which resulted in a £1.4 million boost in parking revenue despite a notable drop in car park visits. However, the latest figures suggest that this income is now on the decline. Richard Moore, the council's head of transport and environment, emphasized the importance of reducing car traffic in the city center, citing environmental concerns and the potential negative impact on local businesses due to congestion. Labour councillor Mike Bland raised questions about the council's strategy in light of the decreasing parking income. Moore reiterated the need to balance accessibility with the goal of maintaining a vibrant and less congested city. Despite the challenges posed by reduced parking income, Canterbury's city center has seen a 1.2% increase in footfall. The council's documents indicate that while some car parks, like those on Castle Row, were closed for parts of the year, this led to increased usage in other areas. In contrast, Herne Bay experienced nearly 40,000 fewer parking instances, while Whitstable saw a slight uptick in parking activity.
