Sea World Helicopters CEO: Brisbane inquest reveals pilot distraction led to fatal crash
A recent inquest in Brisbane has shed light on a tragic mid-air helicopter collision that claimed the lives of four individuals near the Gold Coast's Sea World theme park in January 2023. The incident involved two helicopters operated by Sea World Helicopters, now known as Surfers Paradise Helicopters. According to Brett Newman, the chief executive of the helicopter company, the crash could have been avoided if the pilot, Ashley Jenkinson, had been more attentive and looked to his right before taking off. Newman suggested that Jenkinson was distracted by passengers in the front row, who were engaged in conversation about boats, leading him to overlook the presence of the other helicopter. The inquest revealed that the other pilot, Michael James, was descending at the time of the collision, while Jenkinson was preparing for takeoff. A preliminary report indicated that James did not hear Jenkinson's radio call, a situation Newman believes was due to Jenkinson failing to make the outgoing communication. This oversight contributed to a critical misunderstanding, as James assumed that no other helicopter would be taking off in front of him. The inquest highlighted the complexities of air traffic management in busy tourist areas, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to communication protocols. Further complicating the narrative, the inquest also touched on Jenkinson's personal struggles, including undisclosed issues with drug use. Newman expressed his shock upon learning of Jenkinson's behavior, stating that had he been aware, he would have terminated his employment immediately. The inquest continues, led by Coroner Carol Lee, as it seeks to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this devastating event, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
