Brisbane bus driver convicted in Tia Cameron fatal crash appeals decision

A Brisbane bus driver, Lindsay Francis Selby, is currently appealing his conviction for careless driving that resulted in the tragic death of 18-year-old Tia Cameron over two years ago. In March 2024, Selby was found guilty of driving without due care when his bus struck Cameron on a footpath in the city’s central business district. The court heard that Cameron suffered catastrophic injuries after being pinned against a wall by the bus. Following the trial, Selby received a wholly suspended eight-month sentence and was disqualified from driving for a year. During the appeal, which took place in the Brisbane District Court, Selby’s lawyer argued for the conviction to be overturned, claiming that the original magistrate had erred in assessing the evidence. Judge Bernard Porter KC indicated that the appeal could be treated as a "true rehearing," a rare occurrence in the legal system. He emphasized that he would thoroughly review all evidence, including video footage from the bus that captured the moments leading up to the crash. The footage revealed that Selby was traveling at approximately 15 kilometers per hour while making a left turn. His defense contended that he had only seconds to react to the situation and believed he was applying the brakes, although it was established that the brakes were never activated. The judge focused on whether Selby was paying adequate attention and if he could have made a proper judgment before the collision occurred. As the appeal unfolded, emotions ran high, particularly when Cameron's father interjected in the courtroom, questioning Selby’s actions during the incident. The prosecution argued that Selby appeared relaxed and failed to react appropriately to the stopped cars ahead of him. Judge Porter described the incident as a tragedy and has reserved his decision on the appeal, leaving the outcome uncertain for both the driver and Cameron's grieving family.
