UAS-B Trains Karnataka Farmers on Low-Cost Biochar Production to Enhance Soil Health
In Bangalore, the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS-B) is making significant strides in promoting sustainable agriculture through the introduction of biochar production. Biochar, a charcoal-like substance created by heating organic biomass in a low-oxygen environment, offers numerous benefits for soil health. Researchers at UAS-B are actively training farmers across ten districts in Karnataka to produce biochar from crop residues, such as coconut shells and sunflower heads, using a cost-effective and portable drum technology. The initiative, led by Krishna Murthy and his team, aims to empower small and marginal farmers by providing them with the necessary tools and training to utilize their agricultural waste effectively. The process involves filling a 200-liter drum with crop residue, igniting it with dry grass, and then sealing it to restrict airflow. This method allows for the conversion of waste into biochar within two to three hours, preserving organic carbon that would otherwise be lost through open burning. By doing so, farmers can enhance their soil's organic carbon content, which is crucial for long-term soil health. Field trials have shown promising results, indicating that biochar can improve crop productivity by 10% to 30% and increase water retention by 10% to 25%. This is particularly beneficial for regions in Karnataka that have been severely affected by low soil organic carbon (SOC) levels. The Bhoochetana initiative revealed that over half of the sampled fields in the state are deficient in SOC, with Kolar district being the most impacted. The introduction of biochar could help reverse this trend, offering a sustainable solution to the challenges faced by farmers. Overall, UAS-B's efforts not only aim to improve agricultural practices but also contribute to the broader goal of enhancing soil health and sustainability in Karnataka. By training farmers to produce and utilize biochar, the initiative fosters a more resilient agricultural ecosystem that can withstand the pressures of modern farming.
