Karnataka CM Shivakumar Promises New Policy and Subsidy Review for Kannada Film Industry
Bangalore, the vibrant capital of Karnataka, is currently at the forefront of discussions regarding the future of its flourishing Kannada film industry. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar recently met with representatives from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), where he expressed the government's commitment to revamping the film policy. This initiative aims to bolster the industry by increasing subsidies, establishing a film archive, and expediting the process for the state film awards. The CM's assurances come at a crucial time as the industry seeks support to navigate the challenges posed by technological advancements and changing market dynamics. During the meeting, the KFCC delegation presented a comprehensive memorandum outlining their needs for the industry's survival and growth. Among their requests were the establishment of a government-run OTT platform, financial assistance for small-budget films, and amendments to the Cinematograph Act. The current film policy, which dates back to 2011, has become outdated, failing to address the rapid evolution of digital distribution and emerging technologies. The delegation emphasized the importance of protecting the Kannada film industry while also expanding its reach into global markets. The decline in the number of cinema halls in Karnataka—from around 1,200 to just 400—has raised concerns about the accessibility of films. The KFCC called for incentives to construct new theaters, particularly in urban and rural areas, as well as support for renovating existing single-screen theaters. Additionally, the preservation of over 3,000 Kannada films shot on celluloid is urgent, with many films at risk of deterioration. The government’s previous allocation of funds for film archiving has yet to materialize, prompting the KFCC to urge swift action. As Bangalore continues to evolve, the collaboration between the government and the film industry could pave the way for a more robust and sustainable future for Kannada cinema. The proposed initiatives reflect a shared vision of revitalizing the industry, ensuring that it not only survives but thrives in the years to come.
