BMTC Urges Drivers Not to Deny Bus Travel Due to Lack of Change in Bangalore
Bangalore's public transport system is undergoing a significant transformation following a recent inspection by the state's transport minister, Byrathi Suresh. On a surprise visit, Suresh traveled incognito on BMTC buses to assess the experience of ordinary commuters. His journey, however, took an unexpected turn when he was asked to leave a bus due to a lack of exact change for his fare. This incident prompted immediate action from the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), which has since issued a firm directive to its staff regarding passenger treatment. In response to the minister's experience, BMTC managing director Raghunandan Murthy emphasized the importance of respect and courtesy in interactions with passengers. The corporation has made it clear that forcing passengers off buses for not having the correct change will not be tolerated. Instead, BMTC encourages the use of modern payment methods, such as UPI, through dynamic QR codes available on electronic ticket machines (ETM) installed in all buses. This initiative aims to streamline the payment process and enhance the overall commuting experience. Additionally, the BMTC is taking steps to address operational issues, such as ensuring that all bus stops are accurately reflected in the ETM systems. Murthy has instructed divisional controllers to identify and rectify any discrepancies promptly. Furthermore, to improve service quality, drivers and conductors who receive frequent complaints will undergo soft skills training at the Vaddarahalli training center. Conversely, those who are commended by passengers will be recognized with certificates of appreciation, fostering a culture of excellence within the organization. These measures reflect Bangalore's commitment to enhancing public transport and ensuring a more pleasant experience for its commuters. As the city continues to grow, such initiatives are vital for maintaining an efficient and user-friendly transport system.
