Bangalore Development Authority Sets Guinness Record by Planting 1.5 Million Saplings
Bangalore recently achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a Guinness World Record for planting nearly 1.5 million native saplings in just 12 hours. This ambitious initiative, organized by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), is recognized as one of the largest coordinated urban plantation drives globally. The event took place on Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Jayanti and saw enthusiastic participation from a diverse group of citizens, government departments, educational institutions, resident welfare associations, corporates, NGOs, and thousands of volunteers. The drive was particularly successful at the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Layout (DSKL), where over 710,000 saplings were planted, surpassing the initial target of 700,000. Similarly, at the Banashankari 6th Stage Layout (BSKL), volunteers planted 105,800 saplings against a goal of 105,000. This collective effort not only set a record but also highlighted the community's commitment to environmental stewardship and the importance of green spaces in urban settings. The initiative is part of the Bengaluru Urban Ecological Restoration Mission 2026-30, which aims to enhance the city's green cover, promote biodiversity, and create climate-resilient neighborhoods. BDA chairman NA Haris emphasized that this achievement belongs to every citizen of Bangalore, reinforcing the idea that environmental responsibility starts with collective action. Looking ahead, BDA commissioner Major P Manivannan stated that the focus will now shift to ensuring the survival and healthy growth of the newly planted saplings. This involves careful maintenance and support, including logistics for transportation, plantation tools, hydration points, and medical assistance. The successful execution of this drive not only marks a significant achievement for Bangalore but also sets a precedent for future environmental initiatives in urban areas.
