Chicago Restaurateur Faces Challenges Relaunching Jerk Soul Restaurant in Accra, Ghana
Telie Woods, a restaurateur from St. Louis, made a significant life change when he relocated to Accra, Ghana, in 2022, hoping to embrace retirement after years of running his successful Caribbean fusion restaurant, Jerk Soul. However, the transition proved to be more challenging than he anticipated. Instead of slowing down, Woods found himself driven by a renewed sense of purpose, leading him to open Jerk Soul Ghana just six months after his arrival. His friends encouraged him to continue working, and he soon realized that his passion for food and community could not be easily set aside. Initially, Jerk Soul Ghana flourished, becoming one of the largest African American-owned restaurants in the country. It quickly turned into a vibrant hub for Black expats, tourists, and various organizations, providing a welcoming space for those seeking familiar flavors and connections. Woods hosted numerous groups, from universities to celebrities, creating a sense of belonging for the African diaspora. However, the journey was fraught with challenges, including navigating local regulations and cultural differences that required him to adapt his menu and business practices. As Woods learned to blend Caribbean, soul, and Ghanaian cuisines, he faced the realities of running a business in a new environment. His menu evolved to incorporate local tastes, leading to unique dishes like Jerk Jollof. Despite the hurdles, Woods remains committed to his vision and is currently seeking a new location for Jerk Soul, as the original setup did not meet long-term needs. His experiences have inspired him to write a book about his journey and establish the Diaspora Enrichment Awards, celebrating contributions to African development. Woods's connection to Ghana runs deep, as he reflects on the historical ties to his ancestors. He believes in the importance of returning to the Motherland and contributing positively to its growth. With resilience and determination, Woods continues to navigate his entrepreneurial path in Accra, embracing the challenges and opportunities that come his way.
