Accra to Host Inaugural Ghana Creative Economy Initiative Featuring S.W.A.T. Creator and Producers

Accra, the vibrant capital of Ghana, is set to host the inaugural Ghana Creative Economy Initiative this month, bringing together notable figures from the entertainment industry. Among the attendees are Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, creator of the CBS drama S.W.A.T., and Paul Garnes, a long-time producer for Ava DuVernay. This initiative, curated by Ghanaian-British producer Dorina Amina Abubakar, aims to foster growth in Ghana's creative sector through a series of workshops, masterclasses, and a summit focused on collaboration and investment. The initiative features an intensive Directing Lab running from July 14 to 23, which includes eight producer-director teams from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. These teams, recognized for their work with platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, will participate in a ten-day workshop led by seasoned directors such as Rachel Raimist and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas. This hands-on experience is designed to enhance their skills and prepare them for the competitive landscape of the global entertainment industry. In addition to the Directing Lab, the initiative will offer free public masterclasses from July 20 to 24 at various venues across Accra. These sessions will cover essential topics such as development, pitching, and mobile cinema, led by industry experts like Quan Phung and Sidra Smith. This educational component aims to empower local creatives, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the evolving creative economy. The highlight of the initiative will be the Creative Economy Summit on July 22 at Google Accra, where filmmakers, investors, and policymakers will convene to discuss the future of Ghana's creative landscape. Abubakar emphasizes the importance of building professional networks and fostering international collaboration, stating that Ghana has the potential to become a leading hub for creative industries in Africa. This initiative is not just a one-time event; it aims to create lasting partnerships and inspire a new generation of creatives ready to compete on the global stage.
