GTA Announces 2026 Emancipation Day Program
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has unveiled the program for the 2026 Emancipation Day commemoration, culminating on August 1 at Assin Manso in the Central Region. Under the theme "Reconnecting Roots, Celebrating Freedom, Experience Ghana," events will span the Greater Accra, Central, and Upper East regions. The schedule kicks off on July 18 with a fitness walk from Ayi Mensah to Peduase in Greater Accra and a parallel event at the Pikworo Slave Camp in the Upper East Region. On July 23, Accra will host a Tribute to Ancestors ceremony, featuring wreath-laying at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, the George Padmore Research Library, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Durbars of chiefs are planned for July 29 at Assin Praso and the Pikworo Slave Camp. The annual Reverential Night on July 31 at Cape Coast Castle will include a candlelight procession, testimonies, and the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. The commemoration concludes on August 1 with a durbar at Assin Manso School Park, featuring wreath-laying and a visit to the historic Nonko Nsuo (Slave River). These events honor the resilience of Africans who endured the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and aim to strengthen ties with the African diaspora.
