Former Taliban Commander Sentenced to 42 Years in New York for Journalist Kidnapping and Soldier Killings
A former Taliban commander, Haji Najibullah, was sentenced to 42 years in prison for his involvement in the kidnapping of journalist David Rohde and for providing support that led to the deaths of three American soldiers. The sentencing took place in a Manhattan federal court, where Rohde confronted Najibullah, expressing his disappointment at the commander’s refusal to accept responsibility for his actions during the 2008 abduction. Najibullah, 50, pleaded guilty in April 2025 to charges of providing material support for terrorism and conspiring to take hostages.
