Richmond Considers Moving SS Red Oak Victory

Pubblicato da San Francisco · Richmond · 3 giorni fa

Richmond is currently exploring the potential relocation of the historic SS Red Oak Victory, a World War II-era ship that holds significant cultural and economic value for the community. Built at the Kaiser Shipyards, the SS Red Oak Victory is the last of its kind and has been a symbol of Richmond's rich maritime history. Recently, the City Council approved a contract worth $299,797 for a study aimed at determining the feasibility of moving the ship closer to the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park. This strategic move is expected to enhance public accessibility and visibility, ultimately boosting economic development in the area. Port Director Charles Gerard emphasized the financial benefits of relocating the ship, projecting that its annual revenue could soar from $153,000 to as much as $1.2 million. This increase is anticipated to come from heightened visitor interest and external funding sources. The Ford Point location, where the ship would be moved, is seen as a prime spot due to its proximity to various attractions, including the Craneway Pavilion and ferry services. Fred Clink, representing a group of crewmembers, expressed strong support for the study, highlighting the community's desire to see the ship thrive in a more accessible location. However, the proposed move is not without its challenges. The estimated cost of relocating the ship ranges from $16 million to $20 million, a significant investment that has raised concerns among some council members. Claudia Jimenez, who supported both the study and a previous proposal regarding the Craneway Pavilion, acknowledged the financial implications of the project. Meanwhile, Council member Sue Wilson voiced her apprehensions about funding, questioning the city's responsibility in covering the costs. Despite the mixed opinions, the study has garnered broad support, with the hope that it will pave the way for a revitalized future for the SS Red Oak Victory and the Richmond community.
