Can I finally start using Wayland in 2026?

Pubblicato da Design Matters · 5 giorni fa

Wayland, the long-awaited successor to the X server for Linux, has faced numerous challenges since its inception in 2008, particularly regarding hardware and software compatibility. Despite significant advancements, such as improved nVidia driver support and the introduction of explicit sync features, many users still encounter issues, especially with high-resolution monitors like the Dell 8K. The transition to Wayland is becoming increasingly urgent as major Linux distributions begin to adopt it as their default graphics stack. However, persistent problems, such as the lack of TILE support for multi-stream displays, continue to hinder a smooth migration for users reliant on specific setups. As developers work on patches and improvements, the hope remains that by 2026, Wayland will finally be a viable option for all users.
