Democratic Republic of Congo selects Houston for World Cup base camp
The Democratic Republic of Congo has selected Houston as its base camp for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team, known as Les Léopards, will train at the former Houston SaberCats rugby facility, temporarily renamed the Houston Training Centre for the tournament. This decision came after local organizers collaborated with FIFA to secure a spot when Congo qualified. The team is scheduled to play Portugal on June 17 in Houston. Significant upgrades, including a full pitch replacement, are planned for the training facility, with improvements expected to benefit the local area beyond the World Cup.
