Firefighters Tackle Gorse Fire in Dublin Mountains, Smoke Reaches Templeogue Area
Firefighters have been engaged in a challenging battle against gorse fires in the Dublin Mountains since the early hours of the morning. The first fire ignited around 2 a.m. off Piperstown Road, near the infamous Hellfire Club, prompting a swift response from over 20 firefighters. A second fire was reported in close proximity at Glassamucky, leading to concerns about smoke drifting across parts of south Dublin and even into the city itself. The Dublin Fire Brigade has advised residents in affected areas to keep their doors and windows closed to mitigate the impact of smoke, despite the warm weather. The situation has been exacerbated by strong winds, which have created "whirling vortices" that complicate firefighting efforts. Fire crews, equipped with five fire engines, are working diligently to contain the blazes. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area due to reduced visibility on nearby roads, including the M50, and have also called on local farmers to check on their livestock as a precautionary measure. These incidents come amid a prolonged period of warm, dry weather across Dublin, which has heightened the risk of wildfires in upland regions. While controlled burning is a common practice in rural land management, it is prohibited from March 1 to August 31 under the Wildlife Act to minimize wildfire risks during nesting season and dry spells. Violations can lead to serious consequences, including reviews of government grants for offenders. As the weather forecast indicates continued dry conditions until the weekend, with rain expected to arrive soon, the Department of Agriculture is closely monitoring fire risks. Minister Martin Heydon has assured that the department collaborates with Met Éireann to communicate high-risk periods to relevant stakeholders, aiming to prevent further wildfires in the region.
