Arlington Public Schools Reinstates Kaiser and Cigna for Health Insurance in 2024
Arlington Public Schools (APS) is set to reinstate Kaiser Permanente and Cigna as health insurance providers starting in 2027, marking a significant shift after their departure in 2023. Superintendent Francisco Durán announced this decision during the School Board meeting on May 28, emphasizing the importance of stability and quality care for staff members. The two companies will replace CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, which has been the provider since January 2024. The upcoming transition aims to address the challenges faced during the previous contract change, which was marred by miscommunication and dissatisfaction among employees. The selection process for the new health insurance providers involved a comprehensive review, with input from staff and representatives from the Arlington Education Association and Arlington School Administrators. This collaborative approach was designed to ensure that the decision-making process was transparent and focused on the overall quality and value of the proposals. AEA president June Prakash highlighted the objective nature of the review, while Corey Dotson, assistant superintendent for human resources, reiterated the commitment to balancing affordability and employee needs. To facilitate a smooth transition, APS will host an open enrollment period in October for current employees and retirees under 65, allowing them to choose between Kaiser Permanente and Cigna. Initial information about the new plans was shared with staff on May 29, with additional details, including pricing options, expected over the summer. This proactive communication is intended to assist teachers and staff who may need to make decisions before the end of the school year. In addition to the health insurance updates, APS is also preparing for the upcoming summer school program, which is nearly fully staffed and set to begin on July 6. Superintendent Durán expressed pride in the accomplishments of APS students, including those from Williamsburg Middle School who recently performed the National Anthem at Nationals Park, showcasing the district's talent on a prominent stage.
