Emergency Declared as House Fire Destroys Home in Clontarf, North of Brisbane
A man in his twenties has been arrested following a suspicious fire that devastated a house and damaged two neighboring properties in Clontarf, a suburb north of Brisbane. The incident occurred on the afternoon of May 30, 2026, when emergency services were responding to a domestic violence-related disturbance. Acting Inspector Jason Higgs reported that police were en route to the initial disturbance when they received the call about the fire, which quickly escalated. Approximately 34 firefighters from the Queensland Fire Department were dispatched to the scene on Weaber Street, where they worked diligently to control the blaze. Superintendent Mark Halverson noted that the fire originated in the central house and rapidly spread to the adjoining homes. The intensity of the fire posed significant challenges, but the firefighting crews managed to prevent further damage to additional dwellings. Unfortunately, due to severe structural damage, firefighters were unable to access the central house for a primary search. As the situation unfolded, police actively sought a man believed to be one of the residents of the house where the fire started. Witnesses reported seeing him fleeing the scene, which has become a crucial element of the ongoing investigation. Earlier in the day, police had already visited the property, and it was noted that the regular occupants had left in a vehicle before the fire broke out. In response to the smoke and safety concerns, an emergency declaration was issued, advising local residents to remain indoors. Fire crews are expected to remain on-site overnight to monitor any lingering hot spots and ensure the safety of the surrounding community. This incident has raised significant concerns about safety and the potential for further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
