Brisbane Pilot Faces Charges for Smuggling Two Fugitives on Alleged 'Black Flight
In a significant development at Brisbane Airport, Jay Davis, a 32-year-old pilot, was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for his alleged involvement in a "black flight" that smuggled two fugitives from New South Wales into Indonesia. This operation reportedly took place in 2025, and Davis was apprehended upon his return to Australia after being detained in an Indonesian prison. He now faces two counts of people smuggling, which could result in a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. The case has drawn attention not only for its criminal implications but also for the broader issues surrounding illegal flights. According to the AFP, Davis was one of two pilots who flew a plane with its transponder turned off, making it difficult to track. The flight originated from Coen and made its way to Port Stewart in Far North Queensland, where the two fugitives boarded. The aircraft continued its journey without a transponder until it reached international waters, eventually landing in Merauke, Indonesia, where the fugitives were apprehended by local immigration officials. Davis's arrest follows earlier charges against Grant Schultz, a 42-year-old aviation company owner, who allegedly organized the flight. Schultz has also faced legal proceedings in relation to the smuggling operation. The two fugitives involved, Zulfukar Aljubouri and Duong Tan Le, have serious criminal backgrounds, including allegations of kidnapping and drug-related offenses. As the investigation continues, the Brisbane Magistrates Court has adjourned the matter until September, granting Davis bail in the meantime. Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer emphasized the dangers associated with such flights, describing them as reckless and highlighting the risks involved for all parties.
