Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet in Austin Struggles to Compete with Waymo's Larger Service
Tesla's robotaxi service in Texas is still in its early stages, trailing behind competitors like Waymo. As of now, Tesla operates only 42 autonomous vehicles on Texas roads, a stark contrast to Waymo's impressive fleet of 577. This information comes from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, which recently updated its records as part of a new authorization process for autonomous vehicle companies. Other players in the market, such as Avride and Nuro, also boast larger fleets than Tesla, with 317 and 47 vehicles respectively. Launched in June 2022, Tesla's robotaxi pilot program initially offered rides to a select group of users in Austin. Although these vehicles are designed for full autonomy, Tesla has taken precautions by having employees present in the front passenger seat during rides. Recently, however, the company has begun to test some of its robotaxis in Austin without human supervision, indicating a gradual shift towards fully autonomous operations. Tesla's service is not limited to Austin; it also extends to parts of Dallas and Houston, showcasing the company's ambition to expand its reach in Texas. In contrast, Waymo, which is part of Alphabet, introduced its own driverless service in Austin through a partnership with Uber in March 2025. Waymo's service also covers Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, although it has faced challenges, including temporarily suspending rides in these areas due to concerns about vehicle performance in flooded conditions. As the competition heats up in Texas, the future of autonomous transportation remains an exciting and evolving landscape, with both Tesla and Waymo vying for dominance in this innovative sector.
