A beloved giant troll sculpture, known as “Malin’s Fountain,” was tragically destroyed in a fire at Pease Park in Austin, Texas, on May 21. The 18-foot-tall wooden creation, crafted by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, had become a cherished part of the local community since its unveiling in March 2024. Dambo expressed his heartbreak over the loss, sharing his feelings on social media and thanking the community for their outpouring of love and support. He noted that the sculpture was built with the help of around 150 volunteers, using reclaimed wood and cedar roots, making it a true collaborative effort that resonated deeply with Austin residents. The fire, which was reported just before dawn, prompted a swift response from the Austin Fire Department. Despite their efforts, the flames consumed the sculpture entirely. Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the blaze, with arson being a potential factor. Dambo reflected on the significance of “Malin’s Fountain,” emphasizing how it represented not just art, but also community spirit and generosity. He fondly recalled how visitors would leave water for the troll, symbolizing care for the environment and local wildlife during the hot summer months. As the community grapples with this loss, the Pease Park Conservancy is working with city officials to determine the next steps. Plans for a memorial are underway, although it remains uncertain whether the sculpture will be rebuilt or replaced. Nicole Netherton, CEO of the Conservancy, expressed the collective sorrow felt by the community, highlighting Malin’s role as a beacon of joy and generosity. The hope is that the spirit of “Malin’s Fountain” will continue to inspire those who experienced its magic, fostering a sense of unity and resilience in Austin.
